Oh, hello!

I believe that my life is intertwined, and that all I do personally informs how I show up each day for my students and the world we live in. I believe that we are humans first and always. So this is a little bit about my humanness: I wake up and think about dinner. My Sundays are sacred. Night at the Museum is the actual dream. My camera roll is my life. I love earth-tones and honey. My top three possessions are my: 35 mm point-and-shoot, blazer, dutch oven. I am a caretaker at heart.  I love an art museum, and I wish I could be a ceramicist or an artist. I know random facts but can't do a crossword. I have travelled to 25 countries and am in a constant pursuit of not speaking French in Spanish speaking countries, and not speaking Spanish in French speaking countries. I wake up and strive to be a sincere and empathetic human being.

My Teaching Journey

I am born and raised in San Diego. Both of my parents are public servants in the criminal justice system. They took us across the United States and globe. We watched the news every night. They believed we would understand the world if we saw it for our own eyes. Who they are and what we did are the foundations for who I am. It brought me to Model United Nations, to college, to studying History, to Paris, to river rafting, and back home. They were innately curious about human life, and curious to see all the ways humans live across our planet. I was taught that meaningful and necessary work of social justice started with education. They raised four teachers out of five children.

It is no surprise to anyone that I became a humanities teacher.

I am deeply interested in human behavior and the politics of our world. I live in pursuit of justice, sustainability, and love. There isn't a history that isn't fascinating to me. A story I haven't wanted to hear. An element of human life I haven't wanted to learn about. I am so curious about the way the world is and am motivated to shape it.  I have an unwavering faith in government. I believe that feeling is so profoundly beautiful. Life is so interesting and complex and arduous and passionate and conflicting. These beliefs and interests and instincts inspire me to teach.

Why Teaching?

I believe in the intellectual power of teaching. I became a teacher because studying history and language allows young people to understand their current reality, build empathy for the human condition, and cultivate their agency as young citizens of this country and the world.

I see it as my responsibility as an educator to ensure that young adults are equipped to navigate and advance through life with conscientiousness, compassion, generosity, and understand their social responsibility.

I believe that education has the power to show students why life is worth living. Gives them the means to deduce what is meaningful and beautiful. And how to find purpose in it with ourselves.

3 Essential Beliefs on Education

Justice

I believe that education has the power to give individuals and society agency to facilitate radical change.

I believe education can right wrong. Can dismantle supremacy cultures and systems. And in its place, create more democratic and sustainable society.

Collaboration

If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.

I believe in the power of community.

I need my colleagues, my students, their families, and the community to do meaningful learning.

Service

I believe that I am a public servant; I serve my students, families, communities, and democracy.

Education is about serving others, past and present, in the pursuit of understanding and bettering the human condition.
